Basements collect water from losses above and from pipes in rim joists, utility rooms, and unfinished ceilings.
Start with utilities
Watch for water near the electrical panel, furnace, water heater, outlets, and extension cords. Do not enter standing water if energized equipment may be involved.
Finished and unfinished basements behave differently
Concrete and exposed framing can often be accessed directly. Finished basements may trap water behind drywall, under floating floors, inside carpet pad, and around built-in cabinets. Moisture mapping should follow the full perimeter of the affected area.
Protect stored contents
Move dry boxes and furniture to a dry zone, place salvageable items on clean supports, and photograph damaged contents before disposal. Cardboard and absorbent belongings left on a wet slab deteriorate quickly.
