What a ceiling stain can mean
Water may travel along joists before dropping through a seam or fixture. The visible stain is often not directly below the pipe break, so inspection should extend back toward the likely source.
Immediate safety steps
- Do not stand beneath a bulge.
- Keep lights and fans off in the affected area.
- Do not puncture a ceiling unless a qualified professional has assessed electrical and collapse hazards.
- Move furniture and valuables out of the room when it is safe.
Drying the assembly
The ceiling cavity, insulation, framing, and flooring above should be mapped. Loose or structurally damaged material is removed in a controlled way, then the remaining assembly is dried and documented.
